Quitman boys fall to Raymond

McCOMB — Poor free-throw shooting late doomed the Quitman High School boys basketball team as they fell to Raymond, 79-68, in double overtime in the Class 4A South State playoffs Friday.

Quitman, which led 29-24 at the half, saw a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter slip away, as the game was tied 63-63 at the end of regulation. The score was 68-68 at the end of the first overtime, and Quitman didn’t score in the second overtime.

“Down the stretch, we were winded, and the bench didn’t play as well as they did during the season,” head coach Chris Coleman said. “We couldn’t afford to take the starters out, even though they were winded. We were 9 for 21 in free throws from the start of the fourth quarter through the end of the second overtime, and that’s what it really came down to right there.”

Darius Hicks scored 19 points for Quitman and also had 18 rebounds. Anterio McKines added 16 points, and Tarvarious Moore chipped in with 13 points. DeQuan Stanley had 11 points, nine of which came in the fourth quarter and the first overtime.

Quitman ended its season 24-8.
