MERIDIAN — The Meridian Community College basketball team has had a marvelous run during the 2013-2014 season, and one of its players has been awarded for her superb play on the court.

MCC guard Kristin Sampson was selected as the MACJC Women's Basketball Player of the Week during the week of February 25 as voted on by the Sports Information Directors of the MACJC Tuesday afternoon.

Sampson is a native of Jackson and came to Meridian Community College after having a successful high school career at Provine High School. Sampson has been one of the driving forces behind the success of the women's basketball team this season at MCC.

Sampson, a sophomore guard, led the Lady Eagles to a pair of victories in the final week of the regular season to help her squad clinch a spot in the MACJC State Tournament. Sampson had a season-high 32 points in an 83-67 road victory over Mississippi Gulf Coast.

She also had four assists and a pair of steals in the victory over the Lady Bulldogs. Sampson finished the week by scoring 11 points and collecting five steals in a 79-68 win over Southwest Mississippi. Sampson is currently averaging 20 points per game for the Lady Eagles and four assists per game.

MCC will return to the court Wednesday (March 5) against Baton Rouge Community College in the opening round of the 2014 Region 23 Women's Basketball Tournament at Mississippi College in Clinton.
