Watkins strong, but West Lauderdale falls to Byhalia

PONTOTOC — A valiant effort by Vince Watkins wasn’t enough for West Lauderdale High School as it fell to Byhalia High School, 63-45, Thursday evening in the Class 4A North State playoffs.

Watkins tallied 30 of West Lauderdale’s 45 points, and head coach Duran Clark said he was impressed with his junior guard’s play Thursday.

“He was attacking the basket really well,” Clark said. “He has a chance to be a really special player.”

West Lauderdale trailed just 30-26 at the break, but a nine-point third quarter doomed the Knights as they saw Byhalia score 21 points to take command of the game.

“We started out with two or three quick turnovers and missed some easy baskets,” Clark said of the third period. “We just didn’t shoot at a high percentage tonight.”

The Knights end the season with a 26-5 record, but Clark said he’s not disappointed in his team despite exiting the playoffs.

“I was pleased with the effort,” he said. “We just didn’t make many shots, but I have no complaints. We had a good season.”
