— LAUREL — The Quitman High School girls basketball team rolled out to a 16-7 lead after one and never looked back as it topped Forrest County AHS, 67-45, Saturday to win the Region 5-4A tournament at Northeast Jones High School.

Quitman had four girls in double figures, with Jelisa Pearson tallying 13 points and Shonte Hailes, Palexus Pittman and Chequira Bonner each adding 11 points.

“That was crucial for us,” head coach Gina Skelton said. “When you can get three and four in double figures, it makes you hard to guard. That was a huge part of our success.”

Quitman led 33-25 at the half and extended its lead to 49-39 at the end of the third.

“Of course, I was extremely proud of (my girls),” Skelton said. “We split with (Forrest County AHS) during the season, so I knew it would be a tough battle coming in. I think the girls came in focused and ready to take care of business.”

Quitman (22-5) will host Florence High School at 7 p.m. Monday.

Kaylor Davis got five crucial points at the end of the game as Newton County secured the No. 3 seed out of Region 4-5A Saturday.

Trailing by three late, Davis got fouled behind the 3-point line, then hit all three free throws to tie the game 61-61. On Northeast Jones’ ensuing possession, Newton County fouled, and Northeast Jones only made its first free throw. Davis then got the rebound and took it the length of the court for a layup, securing the win for Newton County.

“Her last five points were huge,” head coach Cory Cleveland said.

Davis ended the game with 11 points, while Kaylin McCree finished with 10 points. Latesia Davis led Newton County in scoring with 18 points.

“It was a hard-fought  ball game,” Cleveland said. “It came down to the wire.”

Newton County (19-11) will play at Magee High School at 7 p.m. Monday.

Quitman boys 70, Newton County 34

Quitman secured the Region 5-4A championship Saturday with a convincing win against Newton County.

Quitman head coach Steve Hampton said his team came ready to play and never let up.

“We just created a lot of turnovers and played extremely hard,” Hampton said. “The kids really got after it and controlled the tempo the whole game.”

Quitman (22-7) will host Richland High School Tuesday in the first round of the South State playoffs.
