Raiders stay perfect in district

MERIDIAN —     The Lamar Raiders stayed perfect in district play dominating the Copiah Academy Colonels 48-6 on the road last night.

The Raiders got off to a fast start scoring on their first offensive play with  a 74-yard touchdown pass  from freshman quarterback Davis Harrison to Senior wideout Lee Martin. The PAT from senior Danny Weisner was good, giving the Raiders a 7-0 lead. After a good stop by the defense, Lamar took over and scored again on a two-yard run by Sam Vaughn. Weisner’s point after was good, making the score 14-0. After the ensuing kickoff, the Colonels turned the ball over as Danny Weisner intercepted a pass to give the Raider’s excellent field position at the Copiah 26-yard line. After converting a fourth-and-four to keep the drive alive, Dylan Taylor rambled six yards to score the third Raider touchdown of the night.  The point after was no good, making the score 20-0 with 2:37 left in the first quarter.

On Copiah’s next offensive series,  Weisner grabbed his second interception of the night and took it back for yet another Raider touchdown. The PAT made it 27-0.  Copiah’s offense finally answered,  putting together a nice drive capped by a 12-yard scoring pass. The PAT was no good, leaving the score at 27-6 with 3:26 in the third.

The Raider offense continued to roll and following a 34-yard Harrison pass caught by senior receiver Joseph  Marcello at the Copiah six, the freshman quarterback took it in himself. The PAT boosted Lamar’s score to 34. Another big stop by the Raider defense put the ball back in Harrison’s hands for one last series in the half, and once again, it was senior Lee Martin, scoring on a 30-yard pass play as time expired. The Raiders went into the half, leading 41-6.

The Raiders made quick work of the second half, scoring for the final time on a 25-yard pass to sophomore receiver Davis Clayton thrown  by Marcello. The point after by Freshman Zach Engell was good. The final score from Gallman was 48-6.

The Raiders continue district play, hosting  Columbia Academy next week.
