West Lauderdale boys get win, girls fall in tournament

— CARTHAGE — The West Lauderdale boys basketball team advanced to the Region 4-4A championship game with a 58-42 win against Noxubee High School in the semifinal round of the regional tournament Thursday at Leake Central High School.

Vince Watkins led West Lauderdale with 20 points, while E.J. Collier added 18 points for the Knights.

West Lauderdale head coach Duran Clark said he was especially pleased with his team’s defensive effort.

“The defense was really good,” Clark said. “We held them to 14 at halftime and defended them well. We shared the ball and played great defense.”

The Knights (25-3) will play at 8:30 tonight against the winner of the Caledonia High School-Leake Central game.

Leake Central 62, West girls 39

Mallory Thompson was West Lauderdale’s only double-digit scorer with 11 points as the Lady Knights fell to Leake Central in the Region 4-4A tournament.

Alexis Jenkins added nine points for West Lauderdale, which trailed 31-17 at the half.

The Lady Knights (14-14) will play against Kosciusko High School at 4 p.m. today.
