Newton County took advantage of eight Northeast Lauderdale errors to topple the Lady Trojans 13-1 in a rout-shortened, fast-pitch softball contest Tuesday night.
The win secured a Division 5-4A title for the Lady Cougars, who improved to 17-3 overall and 6-0 in league play.
Newton County got a solid effort in the circle from Darby Bishop, who scattered four hits and struck out nine in six innings of work, and two RBIs each from Cassidy Blount and Shelby Barrett.
The Lady Cougars got back-to-back doubles from Latesia Davis and Bishop to break a scoreless tie in the third inning. They led 2-0 after three frames, 5-0 after four and 6-1 after five before erupting for seven runs on two hits, three walks and three Northeast errors in the sixth.
Blount was 3-for-4 to lead the attack, while Davis scored three runs. Ashton Lampton, Savannah Gates and Hannah May all scored twice.
Brittany Baty was the losing pitcher for Northeast, which scored its only run in the fifth when Elizabeth Barnacastle’s RBI single plated Olivia Scarbrough.
