MCC completes 3-game sweep of Ark. Baptist

The Meridian Community College Eagles returned to action Sunday afternoon to complete its three-game series with Arkansas Baptist, and the Eagles also completed the series sweep.

MCC used timely hitting and solid pitching from its bullpen to take a 4-2 victory over Arkansas Baptist to warp up its nine-game home stand.

MCC improved to 19-14 with the series sweep, while Arkansas Baptist fell to 20-12 overall for the season.

Arkansas Baptist took its only lead of the contest in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Keegan Floyd to give the Buffaloes a 1-0 lead. MCC bounced right back with a run of its own in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at 1-1. Garrett Larosa led the inning off by reaching on a walk and later crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Michael Druhan to tie the game.

The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with a pair of runs to make the score 3-1 in favor of the green and white. Ben Gann reached base on a one-out double down the left field line and crossed the plate moments later on a double by Dalton Thomas to give MCC a 2-1 lead. The Eagles pushed one more run across in the fifth inning on a double by Kevin Hall with two outs to give MCC a 3-1 lead.

Arkansas Baptist scored its only other run of the game in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Corky Welch to cut the MCC lead to 3-2. The Eagles scored an insurance run in the eighth inning to hold on for the 4-2 victory. Hall led the eighth inning off by reaching on a hit by pitch and came around to score on a single up the middle by Druhan to give MCC the two-run edge.

Relief pitcher Bryant Johnston finished the game off by working a perfect ninth inning for the Eagles and complete the sweep over Arkansas Baptist.

Josh Curtis picked up the pitching win out of the bullpen for the Eagles and Johnston earned the save. Former Clarkdale star Jonathan Porter drew the start on the mound for the Eagles and worked four innings and collected four strikeouts.
