Newton County wins state

DECATUR — The Newton County baseball team continued its magical season, defeating St. Stanislaus in 3-1 at home Saturday night to clinch the 4A South State Championship Series.

    Peyton Cain (9-1) led the way for the Cougars on the mound, tossing six innings while giving up three hits to earn the win. Will Brand came on in the seventh inning to earn his third save of the year.

    Freshman Jacob Edwards went two-for-four for the Cougars at the plate. Dan Nelson went one-for-two with an RBI; Hunter Collins and Cain Cleveland both had RBIs for Newton County as well.

    Newton County will face Lewisburg on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. from Trustmark Park on Wednesday.
