Knights notch Game 1 win

OXFORD — West Lauderdale High School pulled away with a four-run fourth inning to win Game 1, 9-4, in its best-of-three series against Lafayette High School in the second round of the MHSAA Class 4A playoffs Friday.

Tied 3-3, West’s four runs gave Knights starter Will Stokes room to breathe the rest of the way, and Stokes did well with the cushion. He only surrendered one unearned run the rest of the way, striking out 12 batters and giving up just three hits and four walks. All four of his runs were unearned.

“He had three unearned runs in the first inning,” West head coach Jerry Boatner said. “He had a good fastball and curveball, but he was a bit wilder than normal. He  threw more pitches than usual, but he got the big strikeouts when he needed it. We had to pull him in the sixth inning because his pitch count got over 100.”

Hitting-wise, Stokes also had a strong night, going 3-for-4 for West. Fred Franklin finished the game 2-for-4, and Blake Anderson and Ryan Lane both doubled for the Knights. Daniel Hill had a triple.

“We hit the ball better than we have been,” Boatner said. “We had some clutch hits, and our bunting game was outstanding.”

The Knights (28-2) return to action at 7 tonight in Game 2 of the series at home.
