St. Clair gets win No. 100

DECATUR — She did it.

Newton County High School senior Shannon St. Clair secured a special place in Mississippi high school history by tallying her 100th win during her tennis match against Northeast Lauderdale High School Thursday.

St. Clair won her match, 6-1, 6-1, putting the milestone behind her and allowing her to focus on other goals. Though she knew the moment would eventually come, St. Clair admitted she was surprised how much she enjoyed the celebration.

“I didn’t feel like it would be as big a deal, but as soon as I hit my last ball, and the team was on the sidelines cheering, it was honestly the best feeling in the world,” she said.

Up next for St. Clair is the chance to maybe set a new milestone for future tennis players in Mississippi.

“It’s kind of a relief now (that it’s over),” St. Clair said. “Now I’m going to focus on trying to win a state championship and hold the actual state record. We know of one person who had 105 wins, so basically, I want to get just over that.”
