ATKINSON: Eagles look to shine in 2014

I truly hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year, and it is hard to believe that this is the first Sunday of 2014. I have always said that time really does fly by when you are having fun, and the fun is just about to begin at Meridian Community College. The spring semester for most of the junior colleges in our area is about to begin and that means that the basketball gyms will begin to heat up as the conference portion of the schedule will begin soon.

The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles have a genuine opportunity to make some noise in the MACJC South Division in 2014. The Lady Eagles are currently 8-1 and have won its first two games inside South Division play and will look to continue that momentum with its first game of the new year tomorrow on the road at Lawson State. The lone loss for the Lady Eagles came back on November 16 with a road loss at Pensacola by a final of 81-69. MCC earned its two conference victories over East Central (92-65) and Hinds (87-49) back in the fall, but the road is about to get very tough.

MCC will open 2014 with three straight road games and two games could really shape the MACJC South Division race. After its road game tomorrow night with Lawson State, the Lady Eagles will make trips to East Mississippi Community College and Jones County Junior College. MCC was able to escape with a 57-52 win over the Lady Lions on November 7 and its road game against EMCC this Thursday night will be a very difficult task considering the Lady Lions led most of the game against MCC.

The task will get even more difficult after its road game at EMCC, as the Lady Eagles will make short trip to Ellisville to take on Jones. The Lady Bobcats are currently 5-3 overall and 1-1 in South Division play. The history between MCC and Jones on the basketball court has been very intense over the past 10 years, but the stakes are much higher with MCC coming back into the MACJC this season. The two teams have traditionally split the season series with each team defending its home floor, but a road victory over the Lady Bobcats on January 13 would give MCC a huge boost heading into its first home game of the new year.

MCC will welcome Copiah-Lincoln to the Graham Gymnasium on January 16 in what should be a very exciting game. MCC has had its troubles with the Lady Wolves in postseason play when the Lady Eagles were members of the Miss-Lou Conference. Co-Lin has defeated MCC on many occasions in the Region 23 Tournament and most recently last season, but MCC did earn a win over Co-Lin in the semi-finals of the tournament in 2012 to earn a trip to the National Tournament in Salina, KS. Co-Lin is currently 0-2 in South Division play, but there are still a ton of games left to play as the Lady Wolves are always in the hunt for a regional title.

MCC is currently tied at the top of the divisional race with Southwest Mississippi Community College at 2-0 and the two teams will meet at Southwest on January 27. I guess it is easy to say that the month of January is about to heat up with the women’s basketball team at MCC. The Lady Eagles have brought a very good brand of basketball to floor so far this season and the table is definitely set for what should be a very fun month of January. It is like I said, time really does fly when you are having fun and maybe the Lady Eagles will bring us plenty of fun in the tune of a special month to begin 2014.
