UWA men's hoops set to tip off 2014

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The West Alabama men's basketball team returns from a two week break to open 2014 at Valdosta State on Saturday. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m. central time.

West Alabama enters the matchup on a two game win streak in Gulf South Conference action, but is still seeking its first road victory at The Complex on the VSU campus. The Tigers are 5-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Valdosta State, whom the Tigers have not defeated since Jan. 19, 2012, will hit the court for the first time since dropping its first game to Lee University 72-59 on the road on December 19. The loss dropped the Blazers out of the NABC top 25 poll, but they continue to receive votes. The Blazers are 7-1 and 1-1.

VSU is second in the conference in scoring, averaging 84.9 points per game. Each of their five projected starters currently average double-digit scoring marks with Blake Justice leading at 15.3 points a game. Jeremy McKay follows with 14.5 and is second in the conference in field goal percentage with .513.

UWA currently holds the GSC's fourth best scoring average with 76.0 points a game, as well as the fourth best scoring defense, having allowed 68.8 points.

Sandy Underwood, the conference's fourth leading scorer, leads the Tigers with 18.4 points per game. Desmond Raymond follows with 15.6 points and ranked seventh in the GSC.

Lleon Tillman led UWA in its last trip to the court, setting a career-high of 15 points and 11 boards in his first start of the season.

West Alabama currently sits one spot ahead of Valdosta State tied for third with Delta State and Alabama-Huntsville in the GSC standings. West Georgia and Lee lead the pack with perfect conference records.
