Lamar, Laurel Christian meet again for state title

MERIDIAN —     Like clockwork, you can count on a third meeting between the Lamar and Laurel Christian girls soccer teams in early October.

For the fourth straight season, the two division rivals will meet today for the MAIS Division II state championship. The Raiders, who host the 1 p.m. game, have won two of the three previous championship matchups.

“We’ve been blessed with a lot of talent and the girls have worked so hard,” Lamar coach Mike Crowe said about the program’s success the past four seasons.

The Raiders enter 21-1-1 and haven’t been tested yet during the postseason. That is bound to change, because a thriller against the Lions in the title game is also something you can count on.

“Laurel’s a real good team and they’ve played us really strong the past few years we’ve played them for the state championship,” Crowe added. “Last year went to a shootout and this year I hope it doesn’t go that way, but you never know.

“Every year we play them, we beat them every time by several goals during the regular season. But every time when it comes to the end, it’s a totally different team we face in the state championship.

“We can’t go in there and think we’ve already got it won because Laurel will come in play extremely hard and it seems like they always play their best at the end.”
