Russell clinches series, rolls past Heidelberg 12-1

MERIDIAN — Kyle Russell hit a two-run home run and pitched five innings of one-hit baseball as Russell Christian Academy advanced to the second round of the playoffs, beating Heidelberg Academy 12-1 at MCC Thursday.

The win comes one day after the Warriors thumped Heidelberg 21-7 on Wednesday to take a 1-0 lead in the series. This year will be Russell Christian's first ever appearance in the second round of the playoffs.

“It's really huge for us,” Russell Christian head coach Larry Lippert said. “It's exciting. The one thing we are doing is peaking at the right time. We got 20 hits the other night and we got 11 hits tonight, so we are hitting the ball very well.”

The Warriors got off to a poor start in the first inning, as they booted the ball around, allowing Heidelberg to take an early 1-0 lead.

However, Russell would settle down on the mound in the second, stifling Heidelberg batters the rest of the afternoon. The senior pitcher went all five innings for the Warriors, striking out five and only allowing one hit on the day.

“He started off not throwing the ball real well, and he wasn’t sharp,” Lippert said of Russell. “But, after the third inning, he came to me and said, ‘I think I’m loose now coach,’ and  after that he began throwing the ball harder and getting out of jams.”

The Warriors got a run back in the second inning before exploding for 11 runs in the game’s final three innings.

Russell Christian will play Ben’s Ford Christian Academy (La.) on Tuesday  at Meridian before traveling to Bogalusa, La. for games two and three on Thursday.

“I think like we got a good shot this year,” Lippert said. “We still have six more wins, bt I feel good about the next round. I think we stack up with Ben’s Ford pretty well.”
