MHS girls powerlifting wins state

MERIDIAN — The Meridian High School girls powerlifting team won the Class 3 Mississippi State Championship Saturday night, breaking a streak of two-straight runner-up performances in 2011 and 2012.

The Wildcats finished with 45 points and were followed by Pearl, 39 points; Ridgeland, 26 points and Oak Grove, 14 points.

“It’s hard to win a state championship because of the competion in this sport,” MHS head coach Calvin Hampton said. “Our girls set a precedent to win a state championship at the end of the season, and they did everything they could do to win.

“The seniors really stepped up and laid the foundation down for the team, and the girls took care of business.

Standout performances by Meridian included Jabria Hopkins, 1st place (105-pound class); Katie Glen, 2nd place (105-pound class); Zebreonia Taylor, 1st place (114-pound class); Sheka Crowell, 2nd place (132-pound class); Brenekia Horne, 1st Place (148-pound class); Terriana Grady, 1st place (220-pound class); Alexis Carter, 3rd place (Super Heavyweight Class).

Horne broke Mississippi state records in bench press(150 pounds) and in squat (345 pounds)

Hampton said the win is huge for the program and hopes it will spark more interest among Meridian girls to come out and be a part of next year’s team.

“It will build interest, and it also sets a precedent for the young ladies who are powerlifting,” Hampton said. “The opinion most people have on powerlifting is that girls have to be real muscular. Actually, its a sport all females can do.”
