MCC baseball swept at Co-Lin

MERIDIAN — The Meridian Community College Eagles traveled to Wesson on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader and things didn’t go well for the green and white.  

The Co-Lin Wolves swept away the Eagles in doubleheader action by final scores of 6-2 and 12-2.

MCC dropped its overall record to 8-8 for the season, while the Wolves are now 4-8 for the season.

MCC will return to action Tuesday afternoon to close out its current five-game road trip in a single game against Marion Military Institute. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.

Co-Lin 6, Meridian 2: The Eagles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first aided by a walk and an error.

The Wolfpack tied the game in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by third baseman Mitch Little.

After a scoreless second inning, Co-Lin scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Philip Lott and Ryan Young hit back-to-back singles. Right fielder Choc Hubbard smashed a home run to centerfield to put the Wolfpack up 4-1. Little followed with a solo blast to left field to add to the Co-Lin lead.

The Eagles pushed across one run in the top of the fourth to make it a 5-2 deficit.

Former West Lauderdale star Grant Hill doubled to left field and scored on an RBI single by Paul Angel.

The Wolfpack added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Center fielder Adrian Brown doubled to left field to lead off the inning. He advanced to third on Konner Burke’s sacrifice and scored on Logan Smith’s sacrifice fly.

Colby Whitfield recorded the win for Co-Lin. He allowed two runs, scattered five hits, struck out none and walked three in four innings of work. Casey Hurley relieved Whitfield pitching two scoreless innings and allowing one hit. Corey Funk pitched a scoreless seventh inning striking out one.

Dustin Smith absorbed the loss on the mound for MCC by allowing three runs on four hits, walking one and striking out none in 2 1/3 innings. Also seeing action for the Eagles were Kellon Hibbard (one run, three hits, one walk, three innings) and Baylor Obert (two runs, two hits, one strikeout, .2 innings).

Hill led MCC at the plate by going 3-for 3 with a double and a pair of singles. Michael Druhan doubled, while Paul Angel and Mac Seibert singled.

Co-Lin 12, Meridian 2: The Co-Lin Wolfpack jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning on their way to a 12-2 win in five innings.

For Meridian, Scott Votaw, Garrett Larosa, Hill and Brooks Balisterri singled in the loss.

Meridian starter Jonathan Porter took the loss lasting just one-third of an inning, striking out none, walking none and allowed five runs on four hits. Four other Meridian pitchers saw action including Johnston (three runs, four strikeouts, 2.1 innings), Chance McDonald (three runs, four hits, .2 innings), Jake Smith (one run, one hit, one walk, 1 inning), and Josh Curtis (one strikeout, .1 inning).



MCC softball

The Meridian Community College softball squad traveled to Raymond, MS Saturday afternoon to tangle with Hinds Community College and the road trip proved to be unkind for the Lady Eagles.   

Hinds swept MCC in doubleheader action Saturday afternoon by final scores of 6-1 and 13-2.

MCC dropped its overall record to 0-11 with the loses on Saturday.

The Lady Eagles will return to action Tuesday to host a doubleheader against East Central Community College. The twin bill at Tommy McDonald Field is set to begin at 2 p.m.
