Newton girls top Greene County

LAUREL — The Newton County High School girls fought off a fourth-quarter Greene County High School comeback take a 69-58 win in the first round of the Region 5-4A touranment Tuesday night at Northeast Jones High School.

"We played really well the first half," senior guard Kyla Sheppard said. "We had a lot of intensity. In the second half, we got a little rattled, but we battled and kept our heads up to get the win."

The Lady Cougars led 18-7 at the end of the first quarter and stretched that least to 21, ending the first half up 38-17. The Lady Cougars were ahead 51-30 after three.

"We came out and played big in the first half," head coach Cory Cleveland said. "That carried us through to the end of the game.  We got into some foul trouble in the fourth quarter, and we gave up some easy baskets."

Greene County outscored the Cougars 28-18 in the fourth quarter.

"We have to take what we learned and get ready for our next game against Forest County," Cleveland said. "We had to worry about winning this game to get the chance to play two more. Now the pressure is off, so we can settle down and play."

The Lady Cougars were led by Kaylor Davis with 15 points. Sheppard and Latesia Davis both added 10 points each.

Danielle Street led Greene County with 15 points.  Tierren Blakely ahad 10 points for the Lady Wildcats.

The Lady Cougars will play Forrest County Agricultural High School at 7 p.m. Thursday. The Newton County boys will also be in action Thursday night for the 8:30 game.
