Jones named full-time ECCC assistant

DECATUR — After serving the past year as a graduate assistant football coach at East Central Community College in Decatur, Charles Jones was recently named a full-time assistant on head coach Ken Karcher’s staff.

Jones, who coaches safeties, officially begins the 10-month position on Aug. 1.

Karcher, who begins his second year as Warrior head mentor, said Jones “believes in the mission of the football program, is a good communicator and teacher, has a heart for young men and is a hard worker.”

Jones, a native of Waynesboro, Ga., and a product of Burke County High School, is a 2005 graduate of the University of Alabama, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing and played in the defensive backfield for the Crimson Tide football team from 1999-2003. He was a three-year starter at safety and was named the All-Southeastern Conference Team as a defensive back in 2003. He also received the Bobby Jones Most Improved Defensive Back Award in 2001. Jones served as team co-captain his senior season in 2002-2003.

After graduating from the University of Alabama, Jones was signed as an undrafted free agent by the NFL’s New York Giants. Following a brief period with the Giants, he played for the Georgia Force of the Arena Football League for two seasons.

He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Mississippi State University in Starkville, where he coached defensive backs from July to December in 2008.

Prior to joining the ECCC staff as a part-time assistant, Jones held coaching positions at three high schools in Alabama — Central High School, Bessemer City High School and Jackson-Olin High School, serving as defensive coordinator at two of the schools.
