Lamar assistant coach to put on youth football camp

MERIDIAN — Lamar School assistant football coach Zach Miller will be hosting a youth football camp next week for children in grades three through eight.

The camp, which will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. July 14-15 at Lamar School, will include 40-yard dash and pro agility tests, as well as seeing how many pushups the campers can do. The main thing, though, is that it offers area youth a chance to have fun, Miller said.

“Mainly we want to get kids out there who many not be sure if they want to play football and let them try it out,” Miller said. “We also want to educate them on how to tackle. Coaches these days really emphasize keeping the head up to prevent concussions and neck injuries, and that’s the main thing we focus on.”

The cost is $50 per camper, which goes toward a certificate for each child, as well as toward coaches who will help Miller manage the camp. Registration begins at 12:15 p.m. July 14. Parents will be asked to sign a waiver, and a trainer will be on hand both days. There will be refreshments available to the campers.

“They don’t have to bring anything except what they have on,” Miller said.

Campers will be split into two groups, with third- through fifth-graders in one group and sixth- through eighth-graders in the other. In addition to other camp activities, Miller said he would like to test campers’ punt, pass and kick — how far they can do each.

The camp offers youth a chance to learn the game of football and enjoy their afternoons.

We really don’t have anything else around here for kids to do as far as camps go as far as I know,” Miller said.
