NCA boys net crucial win

After battling flu-like symptoms in recent games, Newton County Academy forward Chance Collins was at full strength Thurday night, helping the Generals to a 54-46 win over Lamar Christian at home.

Collins led the Generals on offense with 32 points while also compiling 12 rebounds, six assists and two steals on the night.

“Tonight was the first night he was fully healthy,” NCA head coach Tommy Parker said of Collins. “He came out and set the tempo early. He pushed the ball and made a big difference in the ballgame.”

Seth McCormick also had a big night for NCA, dominating the paint while racking up seven points and nine rebounds. McCormick was one of several Generals who made a difference on the defensive end, as Parker said he was impressed with his team’s defensive performance on the night.

The Generals took a 27-25 lead into the half before catching fire in the third to take a 43-34 lead into the fourth quarter.

“Throughout the year, we have not played very well in the third quarter,” Parker said. “We usually have a lull coming out of the break. We were able to force them into some tough shots, get the rebound and run with it. That’s what we like to do.”

Lamar Christian battled back late in the fourth, cutting the lead to 48-46 with just over a minute to go, but that’s as close as the visitors would come as Newton County (9-5, 3-2) withstood the run and held on for the victory.

“Tonight was a huge win for us,” Parker said. “It was huge for us to come back and get over the .500 mark in district. That game was critical. Now we are over .500, and I think we are taking a step toward playing a whole game instead of just two or three quarters.”
