Triple Threats

Cunningham triplets coming up big in MYSO

MERIDIAN — Brant Cunningham never expected to be here: coaching his daughters in an U10 soccer game.

However, when Brant and Maria went to register their girls — Camille, Savannah and Scarlet — six years ago, the Meridian Youth Soccer Organization had other plans.

"I got into it because when you walk up to registration with three kids, they say, 'OK, we need to talk to you about coaching,'" Cunningham said, laughing. "I told them I didn't know about coaching. But they showed me some stuff, and just through the years, I've picked up some stuff.

"We started this when they were 4 and this has been a fun experience. I've learned a lot, as much as they have, I guess. Just working with the kids has been fun.

"I love it and they love it. It's been a great experience."

It has worked out well, too. Playing their first game of the spring season Saturday at the Jaycee Fields, the Cunningham triplets — who turn 10 years old today — dominated as the Pepsi Banshees defeated the Citizens National Bank Raptors 7-4 in the MYSO U10 girls division.

Savannah led the way for the Banshees, pouring it on in the second half as they pulled away from the Raptors. Held scoreless in the first half, Savannah scored early in the third quarter and then twice answered Raptors scores with goals of her own to put the Banshees back in front. In all, Savannah scored four goals to lead Pepsi.

While Savannah led the way, Camille and Scarlet did their part as well. In fact, Scarlet scored late in the first half to put Pepsi on top. Camille scored early on and tacked on a late goal to finish with two as the Cunningham trio scored all seven goals for the Banshees.

"The triplets pulled it off," William Cunningham said. "But we have a great team. It's not just them. It's a great team all the way around.

"We love what we do out here."
