NCA teams advance in region tourney

MERIDIAN —     The Newton County Academy boys basketball team routed Park Place 57-23 on Wednesday to set up a showdown with Russell Christian Academy on Friday in the MAIS Division 5-A tournament.

    The Generals, who improved to 14-6, were led by Trey Collins' 18 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots. Tanner Smith added 12 points and eight rebounds, while Nate Johnson finished with 11 points. Chance Collins chipped in six points, nine assists and nine steals.

    NCA and Russell meet in the semifinal round at 5:15 p.m.

    The NCA girls also advanced to the division tournament semifinal round with a blowout win Wednesday.

    Katie Bounds led the Generals with 14 points, while Holly Jones added 12.

    NCA, which is now 12-14, will face Mt. Salus at 4 p.m. Friday.
