River Cats hold off Spikes, 12-10

MERIDIAN —     Errors once again spelled doom for the Meridian Spikes of the Deep South Collegiate Baseball League, as they fell, 12-10, to the Hub-City River Cats Friday night at Southeast Lauderdale Field.

Former Clarkdale and current Meridian Community College pitcher Jonathan Porter kept the  River Cats’ bats at bay in the first two innings.

However, three-straight walks with one out in the top of the third came back to haunt him.

With speedy center fielder Dominique Griffith on third base, the River Cats decided to gamble, giving Griffith the green light to take off for home.

Taking advantage of a slow windup from Porter, Griffith darted for the plate beating the throw home easily to give Hub City its first run.

Meridian would strike back in the bottom of the inning, as the Spikes rallied for three runs highlighted by a two-run double by Zach May to put them up 3-1.

After retiring the first batter in the bottom of the fourth inning, Porter allowed back-to-back singles to Hub City’s Drew Standland and Hunter Floyd. He then walked Griffith to load the bases.

A pop out by Caleb Lindsey the next at bat created an opportunity to get out of the inning. However, a botched ground ball by first baseman Chance McDonald allowed two runs to score and a two-run triple by David Walley two batters later gave the River Cats a 6-3 lead.

Meridian battled back to tie the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Porter. However the River Cats quickly retook the lead in the top of the sixth with another three-run rally to stave off the comeback

May and left fielder /pitcher Cole Robinson led the Spikes at the plate, combining for two hits apiece.
