Quitman senior earns scholarship

QUITMAN — Quitman High School 2014 senior Hannah Hampton is among 16 seniors from across the state of Mississippi awarded the Lindy Callahan Scholar-Athlete Scholarship, a $1,500 scholarship.

According to the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA), the scholarship is named in honor of Lindy Callahan, who served almost 40 years as Gulfport’s Hall of Fame coach and athletic director. The MHSAA chooses one boy and one girl from each of the eight districts for their academic and extracurricular accomplishments.

Hannah was selected from among almost 300 applicants and represents District 5, which includes all schools in Clarke, Wayne, Jones, Lauderdale, Smith, Jasper and Newton counties. In the 19 years MHSAA has recognized seniors for this scholarship, Hannah is only the second from Quitman; Kristen Davis received the award in 2009 as a QHS senior.

Hannah and the other 15 seniors were honored by the MHSAA at the 19th annual banquet Thursday, April 3, at the Hilton Jackson Hotel. Attending the banquet with Hannah were her parents, Steve and Pam Hampton of Quitman, Principal Michael McDonald and Coach Gina Skelton.

Hannah has played slow pitch softball, fast pitch softball and basketball at Quitman since seventh grade. As a senior, Hannah was pitcher for slow pitch and second baseman for fast pitch. In basketball, Hannah was a shooting guard. During her senior year, she received the following athletic awards: Mississippi Association of Coaches All-Star, slow pitch All-District and basketball All-District. She was voted by her high school peers as Most Athletic and was selected Homecoming Maid of Honor and Miss Quitman High School.

“Hannah is goal-oriented and has a strong work ethic,” Quitman girls basketball coach Gina Skelton said. “She has high expectations, embraces a challenge and is an excellent role model. She is a team player who makes a positive impact on anyone who comes in contact with her.”

During her junior year, Hannah was chosen as the 2014 Clarke County’s Distinguished Young Woman. She was able to volunteer at Love’s Kitchen and perform at The Temple Theatre. As an accomplished vocalist, Hannah’s activities include vocal performances at Squealer’s BBQ, Forestry and Wildlife Festival, Clarkdale Beauty Review, Quitman High School Beauty Review and Arts in the Park.

She has been invited to sing the National Anthem at many different events, such as the Mississippi Association of Coaches Hall of Fame Banquet, the University of New Orleans Men’s basketball game, Mississippi Association of Coaches All-Star as a player/singer and Wreath’s Across America.

Hannah is currently second in her class of 112 seniors, has a 4.0 GPA and scored 24 on the ACT. She plans to attend Jones County Junior College and pursue a career in Forensics.

“Throughout life, I will have to work alongside other people,” she said.

“Involvement in teams and clubs has allowed me to become accustomed to the constant teamwork present in everyday life.”
