Wildcats advance to playoffs as 3 seed

MERIDIAN —     Meridian High's slogan all week was "Win and we're in."

The Wildcats did just that Friday at South Jackson Stadium as they hammered host Forest Hill 35-8 to clinch the third seed out of Division 3-6A. Meridian travels to D'Iberville next week in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs.

MHS, which improved to 8-3 and 4-3 in the division, jumped on top with 7:03 left in the first quarter when J-Mar Smith hit Issac Johnson on a 17-yard touchdown pass.

After the Patriots went three-and-out, Meridian recovered a bad snap on the Forest Hill 4 and Richard L. McQuarley scored from there to make it 14-0 Wildcats.

Forest Hill pulled within 14-8 midway through the second quarter but the Wildcats pushed the lead to 21-8 at the half on a McQuarley 1-yard run.

The Wildcats scored once more in the third and fourth quarters as Smith scored on a 1-yard run with 4:40 left in the third and McQuarley scored on a 6-yard run with 2:01 remaining in the game for his third touchdown of the night.
