Potential South State basketball sites announced

The Mississippi High School Activities Association released its

list of potential South State basketball sites Wednesday with Meridian topping the list fornthe Class 6A boys.

    Meridian leads Gulfport, Provine, St. Martin, Biloxi and Hattiesburg for the right to host, assuming the Wildcats are eligible later this year.

    In order to host South State, Meridian will need to finish first or second in District 5-6A and win its opening playoff game. If the ’Cats were to fall, Gulfport would be next in line.

    In Class 4A, the Newton County boys are the third choice for the South State tournament, following McComb and South Pike. Raymond and Moss Point also are possibilities.

    Choctaw Central is the top site in 3A and is followed by Velma Jackson.

    In 2A, West Lincoln holds the tops spot, followed by Bay Springs and Newton.

    On the girls side, Meridian is the third choice in 6A behind Brandon and Hancock, while Gulfport and Biloxi follow MHS.

    Raymond is the top site in 4A, followed by South Pike and Forrest County AHS.

    At the 3A level, Crystal Springs claims the top spot followed by Choctaw.

    Pucket is the top choice in 2A followed by Bay Springs and Newton.

    MHSAA rules state that a school can only play host to only one tournament, meaning if home court fell to the Meridian girls, they would be ineligible to take it if the boys team was already hosting.already hosting.

    The top two teams at South State will advance to Jackson to play in the Mississippi Coliseum on March 7-15.
