Cougars get rings, rout Richland, 20-1


DECATUR — Cougars rip Richland (Saturday)

    Newton County made quick work of Richland in its division opener Saturday, as the Lady Cougars needed just 38 minutes to blank the host Lady Rangers 12-0 in a rout-shortened game.

    Newton County, 10-2 overall, scored three times in the first inning and never looked back. The Lady Cougars added two runs each in the second and third innings and added five in the fourth.

    RoNeisha Brown was 3-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored and Shea Alexander singled, doubled and scored three times for Newton County -- which took advantage of six Lady Ranger errors.

    Darby Bishop had an inside-the-park homer, a single and two RBIs; Ashton Lampton singled and drove in two runs; Lindsey Savell tripled; and Shelby Barrett, Latesia Davis and Hannah May all had hits. Meagan Higginbotham was the winning pitcher, while Mary Snowden and Savannah Gates had two RBIs each.
