West boys, SEL girls among top seeds at East Central Classic

MERIDIAN —     Last season, West Lauderdale used a late Chris Rhoney bucket to edge Forest for the East Central Classic championship.

    If the seeds for this year’s Classic, which begins today, hold to form the Knights and Bearcats will meet again in the boys title game. Forest is the top seed and will first play Wednesday against tonight’s Louisville-Newton winner, while the Knights are seeded second and open play Tuesday against tonight’s Choctaw Central-Newton County winner.

    The other boys game today features sixth-seeded Southeast Lauderdale and Lake at 5:30 p.m. in the Brackeen-Wood gym. The Warriors and Cougars end the first day slate of games there at 8:30 p.m., while the Wildcats and Tigers play in the South Campus gym at 7:30 p.m.

    Other top seeds in the boys bracket that have byes on the first day of action in the 11-team field are Northeast Lauderdale, seeded third, and Morton and Scott Central.

    On the girls side of the tournament, Southeast Lauderdale, last year’s Classic runners-up, are the top seed and will also first play Wednesday. The defending tournament champion is Scott Central, which is seeded fourth and opens play Tuesday against Newton.

    Southeast’s first opponent will be determined in today’s 6 p.m. matchup between Louisville and West Lauderdale, last year’s consolation champions. Other first-day games are Lake and Newton County at 4 p.m. in Brackeen-Wood and Northeast Lauderdale playing Morton at 7 p.m.

    Forest is seeded second while Choctaw Central is the third seed.

    The tournament runs through Saturday, with the girls championship game slated to start at 7 p.m. and the boys title affair to follow at 8:30 p.m.
