Newton County rolls by Quitman

DECATUR —     Newton County High School got good offensive production in an 11-0 win against Quitman High School in district play Tuesday night.

    The Cougars jumped on the Panthers early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Leadoff batter Jacob Edwards connected for a line drive single to center field. The Cougars capitalized on an error by Briggs Wade at second base and an Austin Elders ground out to put themselves in a strong position early.

    Pitcher Peyton Cain kept the Panthers scoreless for all five innings of play and held Quitman to only three hits on the night while recording six strikeouts.

    The Cougars added four runs in the bottom of the third inning and scored four more in the bottom of the fourth. The Cougars were led by Elders' line drive to center field in the fourth inning, scoring Alec Ivey and Cain Cleveland. Albert McDougle grounded out to first, which sent home Cale Hollingsworth and Austin Elders.

    Edwards was 2-for-3 on the night with two singles with two RBIs, and Elders had three RBIs.  McDougle had four RBI’s on the night.

    The Cougars improved to 8-5 on the season and 2-1 in district play. Quitman fell to 2-12 on the season. The teams will meet again Friday night at Quitman.
