West Lauderdale shuts down Noxubee

COLLINSVILLE —     The West Lauderdale High School baseball team tallied 13 hits, including smacking five extra-base hits, en route to its, 10-0, win over Noxubee County High School in District 4-4A action Monday.

Blake Anderson led the charge for the Knights (17-0, 6-0), as the Southern Miss signeed reached base safely all three times, drove in three runs, and launched a two-run home run to straight away center field.

"I stayed through the ball today," Anderson said. "I got my foot down early and really hit the ball solid."

On the mound, Reed Michel and Chase McClelland combined to throw a no hitter and recorded 12 strikeouts for WLHS.

"The pitchers threw strikes as a whole," West Lauderdale coach Jerry Boatner said. "Reed Michel looked really good."

Michel (1-0) tossed three innings in earning the win, striking out eight batters, while not allowing a single base runner.

"Coach (Boatner) said to me to throw strikes, keep the ball down low and work my off-speed pitches," Michel said. "And I was able to do that pretty well tonight."

Despite the decisive victory, Boatner said there is still plenty of improvement to be made.

"I was a little bit disappointed that we didn't stay ahead in the count," Boatner said. "And I was little bit disappointed in our hitting. I thought we should have put the game away a lot earlier."

The Knights jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in the first inning. Fred Franklin led off with a single to left and scored on Daniel Hill's triple to center. Hill trotted home after Anderson smacked a double off the center field wall. Colton McKeithen's grounder scored Anderson. The Knights added their fourth run of the frame when Ryan Lane scampered home on Michel's run producing single to left.

West added three more runs in the second, highlighted by Will Stokes' double to right-center that scored one.

In the fourth, Anderson cranked his home run and the Knights added their final run of the game in the fifth when Tyler Lantz dashed home following a pass ball.

Noxubee (1-9, 0-6) will attempt to notch their first district win tonight when the Tigers travel to Leake Central High School.

The Knights will put their undefeated record on the line tonight when they host Caleonia High School in a a district matchup.

"We need to be more patient at the plate," Boatner said. "Guys have to get their pitch to hit and try to hit the ball up the middle."
