After losing 11-1 in Game 1 of its 4A playoff series against Purvis Thursday night, the West Lauderdale softball team rallied back to take Game 2 and Game 3 from the Tornados Friday night.
The Knights out scored Purvis 13-3 in Game 1 before holding on for a 10-9 victory in Game 2. Both games were played at Purvis.
“We came down here with a whole different attitude,” West Lauderdale coach Cary Luke said. “We decided we were going to come out and play. We were embarrassed about the way we played last night and decided to come out with a whole different demeanor.”
The Knights exploded from the start in Game 1, jumping all over the Tornados for an easy five-inning route.
In Game 2, it appeared as if the Knights would run away with it again, as West Lauderdale jumped out to an early 8-1 lead after four innings.
The teams exchanged runs the next two innings, and the Knights went into the bottom of the sixth up 10-3.
Purvis then scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth and held the Knights in the top of the seventh to set up what would be a dramatic finish to the ball game.
Down 10-5 in the bottom of the seventh, Purvis plated four runs and put a runner on second base with two outs to set up the games deciding moment.
With the tying run on second base, Purvis catcher Morgan Fellows ripped a line drive to center field. However, an alert Sarah Lolley got a good jump on the ball and made a shoe-string catch to clinch the game and the series for the Knights.
“I was just thinking, keep it in front of us,” Luke said of the play. “When she made that catch I was like phew.”
