MERIDIAN — The Meridian Community College basketball season is in full swing and it is hard to believe that we will be talking about spring very soon. It just seems like yesterday that soccer and football season were just starting, but I guess time flies when you are having fun in sports.

I wanted to rewind back to last Monday night as MCC basketball played host to Lawson State in a home doubleheader at the Graham Gymnasium. MCC came away with a split against Lawson State, but the night was about one man.

I have had the opportunity to see many different people honored with the naming of different sports facilities here on the campus of MCC and something stood out about the special ceremony that took place last Monday night.

As many of you may know, Coach Jim Redgate was honored with the naming of the basketball court last Monday night at the Graham Gymnasium.

I never really knew Coach Redgate that well before getting to spend some time with about three weeks ago, and I can tell you that I came away changed just by our conversation.

I enjoyed listening to the many stories that he told about some of the former players that he had coached and some of the teams he had the opportunity to coach over the years.

If you really look at his career you need to be impressed, because the hand that Coach Redgate was dealt was a hard one.

Coach Redgate could only recruit in one county back in those days and was limited in what he could do in the area of coaching. I talked to some of the former players as well and they all agreed that he was ultimately a pleasure to play for in those days.

I loved to hear of the stories from his days at Meridian High School and hearing about how great an athlete Mac Barnes was in those days. I could go on and on about the stories, but they all brought joy to my heart.

I just wanted to take an opportunity to thank everyone that attended the ceremony last Monday night and to all of the local media members that participated in the coverage of the event.

It was certainly a blessing to be a part of that night and special people come along that leave a lasting impression, and I can honestly say that Coach Redgate did that for me.

We all at MCC once again want to thank Coach Redgate for is many years of service to the Eagle basketball program and thanks for all of the memories.
