Area Roundup - MCC women place two on All-Region team

The Meridian Community College women's soccer team had two players named to the 2009 All-Region team following its championship run.

  Terri Brown and Christina Murray were both named to the All-Region 23 team following the Eagles' 3-1 victory against host Pearl River Community College on Saturday.

  Murray, a sophomore midfielder, compiled 22 goals and nine assists on the season. She also served as captain of this year’s 2009 Region 23 Championship team and was the National Junior College Player of the Week in October.

  Brown, a freshman goalkeeper, registered nine “clean sheets” and 140 saves. She started 16 games with 1280 minutes played and only 17 goals allowed all season.

  These two All-Region stars will be in action Saturday as the Eagles host the 2009 NJCAA District Championship game versus No. 7 Tyler (Texas) Junior College at Northeast Soccer Complex at 2 p.m. with a berth in the NJCAA national tournament at stake.

Meridian men 80

New Horizon 78

Freshman Deionte Dean's layup with 6.8 seconds left Monday night lifted the Meridian Community College men to a season-opening win at Graham Gymnasium.

Dean, who scored eight points, took the inbounds pass from Jarred Hudnall before muscling the shot up and in.

Freshman Rashad Robinson, a former Newton star, led the Eagles with 21 points, while former Meridian High standout Hudnall added 19. The Wildcats were led by Reggie Lewis' 16.

MCC hosts Mississippi Elite on Thursday.

Wayne Academy girls 44

Sylva Bay Academy 31

The Jaguars used a strong third quarter to pull away from the Saints at the Heidelberg Preseason Tournament on Monday. WA led 18-17 at the half before outscoring Sylva Bay 19-9 in the decisive third period.

Katrina Lofton scored 14 points to lead the Jaguars, who play Russell Christian today in the tournament. The Saints were paced by Jenna Ely's 14.

LATE PREP BASKETBALL

Lamar girls open with unbeaten tournament

Lamar’s junior high and varsity girls basketball teams were in action at Kemper Academy this past week in a round robin tournament, both going 3-0. Last Tuesday, Lamar defeated Winston Academy in an overtime thriller 54-48. Mary Margaret Arrington led the team with 16 points and Olivia Mabry added 13.

In Thursday night's game against Kemper Academy, Lamar won 45-27. Makenzie Cobb led with 12 points, Mabry added 11 and Arrington chipped in 10.

  New coach Jim Redgate will have both the Lamar boys and girls team opening at home today against Laurel Christian Academy.

Leake Academy girls win opener

Leake Academy, the defending MAIS overall state champions, won its opener Saturday in the Benton Preseason Tournament, downing Mt. Salus 55-24.

The Rebelettes raced out to an 18-8 lead after the first quarter and scretched the lead to 46-17 through three periods behind a game-high 12 points from Emily Kea, who also had five steals.

Hannah Peoples added 11 points, while Cheyenne Evans pulled in a team-high six rebounds. Desharrn Jackson led Mt. Salus with seven points.

Leake Academy plays again Nov. 17 at Tri-County.
