Knights drop thriller in Clinton

from staff reports

Thanks to a three-touchdown performance from Brandon High running back Patrick Durr, the visiting West Lauderdale Knights dropped a 35-28 thriller to the Brandon Bulldogs in Clinton.

In a game held on the campus of Mississippi College due to this week's torrential rains, the Knights and the Bulldogs engaged in a classic, with neither team ever leading by more than a touchdown. Brandon eventually prevailed when Durr broke a 28-28 tie with an 11-yard scoring jaunt late in the fourth quarter, giving the Bulldogs the 7-point win.

For West Lauderdale, senior running back Darren Farmer rushed for 123 yards and two scores while fullback Joseph Grubb added 79 yards and two touchdowns of his own.

Farmer put the Knights on the board in the first quarter, scoring from six yards out for WL's first score. Micah McKee added the PAT.

In the second quarter, Grubb found the endzone twice, scoring from 22-yards out and on a 1-yard scoring plunge as the two teams ended the first half tied at 21-21.

After Durr scored to put BHS up 28-21, Farmer broke loose again, this time scoring from 56 yards out. McKee's extra point tied the game at 28-28 in the third and it would stay that way until Durr's game-winning score.

Now 1-1 on the season, the Knights will return to Lauderdale County next week, traveling to take on Northeast Lauderdale.

Neshoba Central 32

Morton 12

The Rockets improved to 2-0 in impressive fashion Friday night, rolling up 347 yards of total offense in a 20-point win over Morton.

Neshoba's Jonathan Cantrell had a pair of touchdowns and Donnie Tabb added another to fuel the Rockets' attack.

Cantrell put Neshoba Central on the board in the first quarter, scoring from seven yards out. When the 2-point conversion attempt failed, NC led 6-0.

Tabb pushed the lead out to 14-0, racing in from 31 yards away and adding the 2-point conversion himself.

After Morton closed the gap to 14-6, Cantrell struck again, this time with a 38-yard scoring jaunt. Tabb converted for two again, pushing the lead to 22-6.

In the second half, NC's Markal Hudson added a 4-yard score and Justin Kilpatrick recovered a fumble in the endzone for a touchdown, giving the Rockets the 32-12 win.

Neshoba will return to action next week, traveling to take on Ridgeland.

Enterprise 41

Lake 0

Enterprise rebounded from a disappointing loss to Newton County in grand fashion by using all three phases of the game.

The Bulldogs (1-1) scored 34 first half points in their shutout of Lake (0-2).

Tyler Cooper got the scoring started for the visitors on a 2-yard run, while Sammie Latney rushed for another 5-yard score. Kevin Lewis added the PATs to give EHS a 14-0 lead after one quarter.

Three more touchdowns came before intermission, but only one was while the Bulldog offense was on the field. Roshawn Johnson scored from 51 yards out.

The special teams contributed when Dustin McKelvain recovered a mishandled punt snap in the end zone. McKelvain wasn't done scoring though, he added a 32-yard interception return for six more points.

Enterprise scored its final points in the fourth when freshman running back Dusty Acreman plunged in from one yard out.

The Bulldogs will host Union Friday, while the Hornets travel to Clarkdale.

Bay Springs 14

Scott Central 12

A pair of failed two-point conversions were the difference in the game as Scott Central fell at the hands of Bay Springs.

The Bulldogs (2-0) got on the board first in the second quarter with a 12-yard touchdown pass, which was answered by SC. Deontae Brown's 10-yard scoring rush.

Just before the half, Bay Springs found the end zone on a 53-yard pass giving the Bulldogs a 14-6 halftime lead.

The Rebels (1-1) brought it to a two point game on Jimmy Broomfield's fake punt. The score came from 37 yards out. Broomfield finished with 107 all-purpose yards.

Scott Central hit the road for Carthage Friday.
