Heather Reed's base hit in the bottom of the seventh inning plated Olivia Taylor with the winning run, lifting Meridian High School to a 9-8 victory over visiting Brandon in area prep softball action Tuesday night.

Reed's hit capped a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh and helped lift the Lady Wildcats to 5-4 on the year.

Meridian jumped to a 3-0 lead but was down 5-3 after four innings of play. The Lady Cats were up 6-5 going into the top of the seventh, but Brandon scored three runs to go ahead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Victoria Moore's seeing-eye single tied things up before Reed's hit plated Taylor.

Roneshia Brown collected three hits to lead Meridian, while Reed and Shakira Stribling had two hits apiece. Meridian had 15 hits — all of them singles.

Devonna Gilmer was the winning pitcher.

MHS is back in action Saturday, beginning play in the Hattiesburg Tournament at 9 a.m.

Neshoba Central 8

Newton County 7



The Lady Rockets continued their hot start with a win over the defending Class 3A state champion Lady Cougars.

Neshoba scored twice each in the second and third innings, three times in the fourth and held off Newton County to improve to 7-1. The Lady Cougars dropped to 4-3.

Central was led by Abbie Joiner and Leigh Ellen Barefield, who both went 2-for-3 with a double. Taylor Tucker also doubled, while Sarah Breland (7-1) was the winning pitcher.

Newton County actually out-hit the Lady Rockets 16-12, getting a double and two singles from Summer Alexander and a single and triple from Emily Davis.

Kasie Buckley and Brooke Boulton both singled and doubled, Katie Brackeen had two singles and Catherine Brand a double for the Lady Cougars. Wendy McCracken was the losing pitcher.

Neshoba hosts Choctaw Central Thursday, while Newton County is at Northeast Lauderdale in a varsity-only makeup game at 5:30.

Oak Hill Academy 2



The Lady Vikings ran their record to 15-3 by topping Class AAA Oak Hill in area MPSA fast-pitch action in Macon.

Central scored all five of its runs in the second inning, while OHA managed single runs in the fourth and sixth.

Marion Colvin (2-0) was the winning pitcher, while Maegen Ellis took the loss.

Blake Rigdon had a pair of hits for Central, while Kendall Taylor and Lillian Lindsey each had doubles. Megan Banks added a single.

Central goes to Hebron Christian Thursday for a district doubleheader.
