One year ago, Nick Brown and Jarrod Moulds topped Nick's father — Ed Brown and partner Chuck Gordon — to win a third straight Bill Davis Fourth of July Tournament title.
And while there was no four-peat for Brown and Moulds on Sunday at Northwood Country Club, the tournament championship did stay in the family.
Ed Brown and Gordon defeated Lamar Arrington and Dan Singley 4 and 3 Sunday afternoon in the match-play finals of the championship flight to win the title after Arrington and Singley dethroned the younger Brown and Moulds Sunday morning.
Gordon and Brown had defeated Allen Massingill and Joel Nelson in their semifinal match earlier in the day. The two wins Sunday capped an impressive run through the tourney for the veteran Northwood duo, which also defeated Joe Rush and Bo Welch as well as Judge Little and Scott Morgan earlier in bracket play.
Rush and Welch won the consolation bracket of the championship flight by defeating Matt Long and Clay Long. Rush and Welch topped Robert Sanford and Tony Polizzi in their semifinal match Sunday morning, while the Longs got past Mac Barnes and Doyle Bryan.
Steve Nelson and Jack Combest won the first-flight honors by getting past Wayne Whitley and David Sinclair in the finals. Nelson and Combest defeated Clark Gordon and Joe Pettey in their semifinal match, while Whitley and Sinclair got past Ben McLeod and Chuck Rea Sunday morning.
The second flight crown went to Dennis Foster and Joe Jackson, who outlasted ironmen Ric and Richmond Alexander in the finals. The Alexanders had gone 28 holes to win 1-up over Dan Garrison and Bob Widen Sunday morning.
Among other bracket winners Sunday:
• Derik Boler and Bo Blackledge won the third flight crown by topping Winston Powell and Bill Powell;
• Bent Moulds and Paul Entrekin took the first-flight consolation bracket over Sean Covich and John Everett;
• Will Watts and J.T. Williamson won over Robbie Garrett and Chuck Butler in the second-flight consolation bracket; and
• Jack Piedmont and Lee Rogers captured third-flight consolation bracket honors.
