Several spots remain for Boy Scouts golf tourney

By Rocky Higginbotham / sports editor

There’ll be plenty of food and golf at Briarwood Country Club this weekend, and it’ll all be for a good cause.

Briarwood will play host Saturday and Sunday to the 18th Annual Boy Scouts Benefit Golf Tournament — a two-person scramble which serves as the local organization’s second-largest fund-raiser of the year.

“This is their biggest fund-raiser besides the popcorn sales they do in the fall,” tournament chairman Benji Brown said of the Boy Scouts and Choctaw Area Council, which serves six counties in East Mississippi and West Alabama. “All of the proceeds will go to the Boy Scouts annual (general) fund ... it’s a big one for them and it’s for a good cause. Every little bit helps.”

Brown said about 65 teams had entered through Wednesday, and organizers are hoping for 80 or more. The deadline to enter is Friday.

The format for the tournament is a two-person scramble, and the entry fee is $160 per team. There will be shotgun starts at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. each day, as well as prizes and a hole-in-one contest.

There’ll also be plenty of good food, as this year’s Saturday lunch will be catered by Outback Steakhouse. Sunday, burgers and chicken will be provided by Briarwood and Tyson, and there’ll also be donuts and coffee on both days.

Prizes will be awarded to the top four places in each regular flight, as well as a Father/Son flight and a Senior flight.

For more information on the Boy Scouts, contact John Beauregard at 601-693-6757. For more info or to enter the tournament, call Brown at 601-693-6184 or contact the Briarwood golf shop at 601-681-6185.
