MCC tennis

Following one day of action at the NJCAA National Tennis Championships in Tuscon, Ariz., the Meridian Community College Lady Eagles have amassed nine of a possible 14 points to find themselves in contention.

After receiving a bye in the first round, MCC's Alycia Le Merle met the nation's 5th-ranked player, Hillsborough's (Fla.) Nachell Proctor, and dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision. In No. 2 singles, MCC's Kelly Sterling defeated Giannina Mulky of Eastern Arizona by a score of 6-1, 6-3.

In No. 3 singles, Meridian's Ashton Hartley defeated Maria Celitti of Johnson County CC 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

MCC's Katy Shoptaugh advanced in No. 4 singles, toping Victoria Nee from Elgin CC 6-1, 6-2 and MCC's Kayla Daughtrey defeated Jessia Gamelgoff 6-0, 6-2 in No. 5 singles.

Meridian Jodi Webb faced the nation's No. 4 player in No. 6 singles and fell 6-1, 6-2.

At the end of the day, MCC tallied nine points and trailed ABAC, (Ga.), Tyler (Texas), and Hillsborough.
