Lamar wins South State golf title

from staff reports

The Lamar School golf team fired a team total of 1-over-par 289 Tuesday to capture the championship of the Mississippi Private School Association's Class AAA South State Tournament.

The defending MPSA Overall champion Raiders got a 3-under-par 69 from Chad Bounds, which was good enough to earn him medalist honors. Individually, Michael Cobb and Allen Massingill each tied for fourth with 1-over-par 73s.

Daniel Fulton fired a 2-over-par 74 for Lamar, while Easton Key shot a 76 and Daniel Finan 77. The Raiders were without Elliot Tramontana, who missed the tournament due to an illness.

The Raiders will now turn their attention to the MPSA Class AAA State Tournament, which will be held Monday at Old Waverly in West Point.

Tuesday, the Raiders were seven shots better than host Presbyterian Christian — which shot a team score of 296 at Hattiesburg Country Club. Lamar and PCS were followed by Madison-Ridgeland Academy, Jackson Prep, Hillcrest Christian, East Rankin and Parklane Academy.

East Mississippi 3-4

East Central 1-2

Needing a sweep of EMCC Monday to claim the MACJC Central Division title and a top seed in the state tournament, East Central Community’s Diamond Warriors did just the opposite, falling 3-1 in the first contest and 4-2 in the nightcap to the home-standing Lions, thus ending competition for 2008.

The defending state champions finished 26-24 overall and 8-8 in division competition under second-year head coach Neal Holliman.

Meridian Community College (10-6) advances to the MACJC State Tournament as division champion and Hinds Community College (9-7) finished runners-up. The North Division winner – Itawamba Community College- is designated as host of this year’s tournament, scheduled May 1-4 on the Fulton campus. The top two teams from each division qualify for the double-elimination event.

In the first loss to East Mississippi, Terrell Hendrix and Deon Williams were both 1-for-2 at the plate and Clint Coleman was 1-for-3.

Southpaw Mack Creighton of Quitman took the loss for EC on the mound.
