A full holiday weekend of golf is under way at Northwood and Briarwood country clubs with a total of 158 two-person teams competing.
At Northwood’s Labor Day Invitational scramble, Chuck Gordon and Bobby Maddox hold a two-stroke lead after firing a 12-under par 59 on Saturday.
At Briarwood’s Harry Lackey Labor Day Four-Ball, Tony Polizzi and Joey Mabry bring a two-stroke lead into today’s second round after shooting a 7-under par 65 on Saturday. In the scramble division of the Briarwood tournament, Robby Garrett and Dan Sollie took a three-stroke lead after one round with a 12-under par 60.
Gordon and Maddox had a dozen birdies in grabbing a two-stroke lead over the teams of Reid Kennedy and Jon Jackson and Eddie Brown and Nick Brown.
Gordon and Maddox birdied Nos 1, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 18.
“It was a good, solid round,” Gordon said. “We didn’t do anything special, just real solid. We made the putts we were supposed to make.
“We were 6-under on the front and 6-under on the back, so it was pretty consistent all day.
“Hopefully, we can at least match that score or do a little better in the next couple of rounds.”
The Browns had 10 birdies and when they came, they came in clumps on Nos. 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 13, 16, 17 and 18.
Kennedy and Jackson also had 10 birdies (Nos. 1, 2, 5, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 18).
Three strokes off the lead with a first-round 62 are the teams of Earl Aycock and Kelly Swain, Manny Mitchell and Elliott Tramontana, and Judge Little and Jimmy Carle.
Aycock and Swain had nine birdies (Nos. 2, 3, 4, 8, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 18.
Mitchell and Tramontana had eight birdies to go with an eagle and a bogey. They birdied Nos. 3, 8, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 18 and eagled No. 12. They gave one stroke back with a bogey on No. 17.
Little and Carle had nine birdies with six coming on the back nine. They had birdies on Nos. 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 18.
Four strokes back at 63 are the teams of Alan Hart and Johnny Dement and Grey Cobb and Johnny Love.
Five strokes off the pace at 64 are the teams of Tommy Williams and Vaughn Rush, Charles Keeton and Wayne Rankin, and Dennis Foster and Sidney Bowers.
Harry Lackey Tournament
At Briarwood Country Club, two separate tournaments are being played. Polizzi and Mabry completed the first round of the three-day four-ball with a two-stroke advantage after shooting a 65 on Saturday.
In second place at 67 is the team of Rex Gentry and Colton Tisdale. Five strokes back at 70 is the team of Aaron Davidson and Jack Combest.
Benjy Baskin and David Rosenbaum are in fourth after shooting a 1-under par 71. At even-par 72 is the team of Robert Sanford and Randy Warden.
In the scramble tournament, Garrett and Sollie shot a 12-under par 60 to bring a three-stroke lead into today’s play.
Tied for second place at 63 are the teams of George Polizzi and Dan Thornton and Robert Frazier and Willie Frazier.
Three other teams are tied at 64. They are Danny Pressley and Scott Marshall, Robert Cardwell and Tommy Peters, and Joe Mabry and David Hoffman.
