Bowling Column: USBC State Youth Championship tournament results released

by Mike Carson / bowling columnist
The Meridian Star

Final results have been released from the recently held USBC State Youth Championship Tournament which took place at Paradise Lanes in Jackson. Local participants included Spence Baucum, Chase Dooley, Chad Pigott, Tyson Ethridge, Olivia Taylor, Hannah Chisolm, Jerry Dearman, Danny Shannon, Matt Alawine and Colton Dooley.

Our local young bowler represented us well by bringing home several trophies from the event. In the Junior Division Team Event, the “Young’s Dodge” team of Spence Baucum, Chase Dooley, Chad Pigott and Tyson Ethridge grabbed first place honors with a score of 2598.

In the Major-Senior division, Danny Shannon paired up with Brandon Whittle of Jackson to capture top honors in the Doubles Event. Danny had a very strong set of 683 which included games of 247 and 259 to lead the effort. Placing third in the same event where Hannah Chisolm and Kevin Davis.

In the Singles event of the Major-Senior division Hannah also reeled off a 674 to take second place.

Congratulations go out to all of our local youth bowlers who took part. You all made us very proud.

We would also like congratulate our local ladies bowling association. Their contributions to the BVL (Bowlers to Veterans Link) have led the state in per capita money the last several years. This year our local ladies recently presented the VA hospital with a check for $3092. Local association president Mary Formby would like to thank everyone including volunteers and contributors for their assistance in making Meridian one of the leading cities in the country in this worthwhile endeavor.

The start of the 2006-07 Fall & Winter season is now only two weeks away. League organizational meetings will begin the week of August 14. The official start of the season will begin August 21. All bowlers, whether they are returning bowlers or new bowlers are encouraged to attend these meetings. If you know someone who has bowled in the past, ask them to return and rejoin our bowling community. Of course openings will be available for individuals and team in all leagues. For more information, call or come by Dixie Bowl Lanes where any of the staff will be happy to assist you in joining.

Along with the kick-off of the new season comes the first of six weekends of the annual Double Tournament. Shifts will be held each Saturday and Sunday and on Labor Day beginning August 19 and running through September 24. The First Place team is guaranteed a payoff of at least $6000. You may bowl as often as you like and may bowl with as many partners as you like each time you bowl. For more information contact Stan Bottorff or go online to www.bowling100.com.

The weekly No-Tap tournament continues every Friday night at 7 p.m. Winners for the previous week were Sue Kirkpatrick for the ladies and Ryan Killingsworth for the men. As this is being written, this past weekend was shaping up to be the biggest weekend of the summer so far and Stan would like to express his appreciation to all who have taken part.

That’s all for this week. Until next week, good luck and good bowling.
