Bowling Column: Summer season is winding down

by Mike Carson / bowling columnist

Action in the 2006 summer season is entering it’s final month and that means the 2006-07 Fall & Winter Season is just around the corner. Tentative plans call for league meeting to be held the week of August 21-25. League action is slated to begin Monday, August 28. Youth leagues will begin bowling after Labor Day and late season leagues will begin soon after.

If you are interested in becoming part of our bowling community stop by Dixie Bowl and sign up for the league or leagues of your choice. As always, there will be a selection of ladies, mens and mixed leagues to choose from.

Openings for individuals and teams will be available in ever league and we would love to have you as a member of our bowling family.

Speaking of our bowling family, I am sad to report that our ranks were diminished in the past week.

Longtime bowlers Marie Hall and Bob Scutt both passed away in the previous week and have left us with a hole in our hearts that can’t be filled. Our sympathies and prayers are extended to their families and friends in this time of sorrow.

Some late breaking news has come out of the Meridian Bowling Association. Local Association Manager Ken Miller has resigned his position which he has held for the past eight years to pursue a job opportunity in Florida. Local Association President Jason Pierce has appointed Shayne Barfield to fill his spot for the remainder of his term. Ken has done an excellent job during his tenure and we will miss him. I have no doubt that Shayne will do well in his new position. We all with both of these gentlemen in their new endeavors.

The next installment of Stan’s Classic Tournaments 4-Game and 8-Game sweeper will take place next weekend, July 29-30 at Hub Lanes in Hattiesburg. Contact Stan Bottorff for more information. Don’t forget the annual Doubles Tournament will begins its six-week run on August 19. The tournament will run each Saturday and Sunday through September 24. There will also be shifts scheduled for Labor Day. You may bowl with as many partners as you with each time you bowl. Entry forms are available at Dixie Bowl or you may enter online at www.bowling100.com.

The weekly No-Tap tournament continues each Friday at 7 p.m. Last week Shine Gray made it two straight wins in the mens division and Sue Kirkpatrick took home top honors for the ladies. Tournament Director Stan Bottorff has announced that the July 28th edition will feature extra cash prizes and awards. Preregistration is encouraged but not mandatory.

That’s all for this week. Until next week, good luck and good bowling.
