Carson Column: Bowlers to receive double dose of tourney action

by Mike Carson / bowling columnist
The Meridian Star

A double dose of tournament action is on tap this weekend as the State Games of Mississippi bowling competition and Stan’s Classic Tournaments 4-Game and 8-Game Sweeper take to the lanes Saturday and Sunday.

Adult bowlers in the State Games will compete in one of six average divisions while youth bowlers will bowl four games in one of five average divisions. Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals will be awarded to winners in each division.

There will both men and women divisions. Shift times will be 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday and Noon and 2 p.m. Sunday. Entries will be accepted up to thirty minutes prior to the beginning of each shift. This event is open only to residents of Mississippi.

On the opposite end of the house, Stan’s Classic Tournaments 4-Game and 8-Game Sweeper will be attracting bowlers from around the southeast.

Bowlers may compete in either or both events. There will be handicap and scratch divisions in each. Optional brackets will also be available. Shift times are 1 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday. Re-entry is allowed.

Bowlers will be able to compete in both the Sweeper and State Games if they wish. You may compete in one event Saturday and the other Sunday. You could, if you choose to, bowl in both events the same day.

Entry forms are now available for the annual Mississippi “500” Club tournament. This tournament is open to the ladies who have had a 500 series. You may invite one “400” and one “600” bowler to take part. The tournament will take place July 15-16 at Strike Zone Lanes in Grenada. The closing date for entries is July 9.

Last week’s winners in the weekly Colored Pin No-Tap tournament were Sue Kirkpatrick for the ladies and Albert Edmonds III for the men. Nearly $500 was paid out in colored pin strikes, wheel spins and Strike Pot jackpots. The tournaments will be held each Friday at 7 p.m. throughout the summer. Those wishing to take part are encouraged to pre-register during the week, but walk-ins will be accepted based on lane availability basis. Last week’s tournament had 45 bowlers so reserve your spot if at all possible.

That’s all for this week. Until next week, good luck and good bowling.
