League action continues to wind down

by Mike Carson / bowling columnist

League action for the 2005-06 Fall & Winter season continues to wind down with championships decided for four leagues in recent days. The Senior Citizens wrapped up their season with the team “Country” taking top honors. Team members were Mary Dearing, Shelia Walker, Bobby Dearing and Cletis McCarra. Later that night the Hucklebuck league closed out the season with the “Mr discount” team of Barry Woods, Steven Eastman, Wes Samuelson, Ronny Phillips, M.A. Copeland and Brian Mattox taking home the crown.

The only other league to conclude the season with a roll off was the Wednesday Night Mixed league where Debbie Robinson, Jeff Pierce, Kim Shirley and Don McKee teamed up under the “Jack’s Used Cars” Moniker to bring home the bacon.

The Senior Non-Smoking league was scheduled to conclude their season last Thursday with no roll off. Since this is written before they conclude I will try to have the final results next week. This week, the remainder of the leagues will conclude their seasons. This includes the Monday Nighters, Dixie Belles, Queen City and Friday Night Mixed leagues.

Summer league action will start on Monday next week and we invite you all to join us the short twelve-week season. This is a great opportunity for new bowlers to gain experience and get the feel for how leagues work. It is also a good time for veteran bowlers to work on their games and tinker with their deliveries when the stakes are not quite so high. Openings for teams and individuals are available in all leagues. A complete copy of the schedule is available at Dixie Bowl Lanes.

With the number of leagues dwindling there are not many scores to report. However, there are a few noteworthy performances that require mentioning. Don Crandel led the guys with a nice 268 game while Mike Cothern came close with a 266. Congratulations go to Bettie Larkin who claimed her first 500-Series with a 520 in the Senior Non-Smoking league. Bettie is a first year bowler and claimed her first 200 a few weeks ago. It’s always a pleasure to see new bowlers excel and recognize them for their accomplishments. We congratulate you, Bettie and look for more from you in the future.

Local bowlers are continuing to make the treks to State and National Tournaments. Statewide, the ladies are competing at Rivergate Bowl in Natchez while the men are at Hub Lanes in Hattiesburg. On the national level, the guys are heading to Corpus Christi, TX and the ladies are testing their skills at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, NV.

On behalf of Dixie Bowl Manager M.A. Copeland and Mars & Steel we would like to thank our bowlers for helping make this past season a successful one. We hope to see you over the summer months. If not, we look forward to your return for the 2006-07 season in August.

That’s all for this week. Until next week, good luck and good bowling.
