Carson Column: Fall and Winter action winding down

Mike Carson / bowling columnist
The Meridian Star

As we move into the last few weeks of April, action in the 2005-06 Fall & Winter Season is beginning to wind down. The final night of the regular season for the Bowlerettes league will be tonight with their championship roll-off to be held next week. Other leagues will soon begin wrapping up the season. Most leagues will conclude competition during the first couple of weeks in May while others will not finish up until the latter part of the month.

In the past most leagues finished up around the same time. But with some leagues adoption shorter schedules and others being pushed back due to storms and other factors we are finding that this is no longer the case. Nevertheless, the 2006 Summer Season will be kicking off in a few weeks and we invite our bowlers to pick out a league and join us during the summer months.

Some new additions to this year’s schedule include a No-Tap league on Wednesday nights featuring three-person teams and a weekly Colored Pin No-Tap Tournament each Friday Night. The No-Tap has become a very popular format and we urge you to give one of these a try. Of course, we will also be featuring our standard leagues including the Adult-Junior league on Mondays, the Summertime Mixed league on Tuesdays and the popular Trio league on Thursdays. Pick up a copy of the schedule at Dixie Bowl. You may sign up ahead of time or simply come in the first night. All leagues will meet and start the same night.

The Summer Youth league is slated to begin this Saturday morning at 11. By request of some of our youth, there will be two leagues. The Major Seniors will bowl scratch ant the younger bowlers will be bowling in a standard handicap league. We must have enough interest in order to fill these leagues so please make sure your child or children are present.

Ladies, don’t forget your annual meeting will be held Sunday, April 30 at 1:30 p.m. at the Scottish Rites building located at the corner of 11th Street and 23rd Avenue. This meeting is important and you are all urged to attend. Business to be conducted includes the election of association officers for the coming year and the distribution of awards and prize money from the city tournament.

In local league action, it was once again the Barry Woods show Thursday night in the Queen City league when he pounded out a nice 268 while on the way to a 709 series. But he got upstaged by Mike Cothern who roared back and cranked out a big 280 game/725 series in the Hucklebuck and followed that up with a 263,717 effort in the Wednesday Night Mixed league. Mike Holden scattered wood with a 267 and Bill Fike chipped in with a 265. And don’t tell Bob Timms that being old means being washed up. His 248, 640 series led all the Senior Citizens this week.

Congratulations go out to Bettie Larkin who recorded her fist career 200 Game with a nice 212 in the Bowlerettes league. The ladies were led in the scoring department by Debbie Jones and her 224 Game while Anita Wysocki took the high series with a 562. Matar McClinton showed Leslie a thing or two with a 216 in the Monday Nighters and Eunice Dillard showed everybody in the Super Tuesday Scratch Doubles how it’s done by capping the high game for the league with a 209 on the difficult Sport Shot condition. Also topping the leader board last week were Renee King, Kate Grant and Mary Siegrist, all of who jumped over the magic 200 line.

That’s all for this week. Until next week, good luck and good bowling.
