Bowling Column: Youth City tourney this weekend

The 46th Annual MWBA City Tournament is now in the books. Congratulations are extended to tournament directors Betty Aycock and Mary Formby and the entire ladies association for putting together an excellent event.

This weekend our local youth get their chance to put on their own show and the Annual City Youth Tournament takes place Saturday and Sunday. The Doubles and Singles events will bowl Saturday at 10 a.m. The Team event will take place Sunday at 1 p.m. All bowlers should be at the lanes at least thirty minutes prior to these times for check-in.

While on the subject of our youth, congratulations are extended to Sarah Terral and Hope Ferguson, both of whom have named recipients of $500 scholarships from the Margaret Moore Scholarship Foundation. This foundation is funded in part by proceeds from the annual mixed state championships, which are held in November of each year. We are proud of our young bowlers and wish them the best of good fortune.

If anyone can find Mona McGrane floating around please let me know. She was last seen high in the sky after pounding out a career high 268 game in the Dixie Belle league last week. We are hopeful that she will eventually come back to earth and rejoin the rest of us mere mortals. Quite a number of our ladies celebrated some good cheer last week including Cathy Jones and Linda Genin, who tied for the high series at 576 while Anita Wysocki cranked out a nice 222. The long list of leading ladies also included Angie Thomas, Kate Grant, Debbie Jones, Denise Rutledge, Mary Siegrist, Taneezia Cook, Willie Mae Aikens, Yolanda Edmonds, Kim Shirley, Renee King, Tandee Marx, Lisa Rickles and Adrienne Watkins.

After a few weeks of lower than normal score on the guys side of the fence, things were able to rebound a bit last week. I have decided that bowling alongside the Dixie Belles leagues is what inspires Barry Woods on Thursday night. He was in fine form last week when he opened with a spare and promptly strung out the next eleven for a 290 game while on his way to a 742 series. He was joined over the line by Steve Eastman, who recently returned from the state of Washington, who barreled his way to a 718. Mike Cothern went eleven for twelve in a 279 effort with M.A. Copeland breathing down his neck with a 277. Tyrone McAlpine put in his 269 cents worth in the Monday Nighters league while Ronnie Thomas rolled his way to a 258. On the senior circuit James Mitchell bowled everyone over with a fine 252 game while Bob Timms pulled out all the stops with a 238/620 effort.

The youth leagues have concluded their fall and winter seasons. Plans are in the works for a summer program beginning Saturday, April 15 and running through the month of July. Anyone interested contact Regina Anderson at Dixie Bowl to sign up. Plans call for three-person teams and you are welcome to bring a full team with you.
