MWBA Championsip gets under way this weekend

by Mike Carson / bowling columnist
The Meridian Star

It’s time for the ladies to take their turn in the spotlight as the 46th Annual MWBA City Championships get underway this weekend. Shift times will be 1p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday for the two weekends of the tournament. Bowlers are urged to be at the lanes at least thirty minutes prior to each shift for check-in. Please check with Tournament Directors Betty Aycock or Mary Formby and make sure you know the dates and times so you are scheduled to bowl. A complete schedule will be posted at Dixie Bowl in the next day or so.

This tournament will be followed by our youth bowlers when they hold their annual city championship tournament April 8-9. The April 1 deadline for entries is about 10 days away. The Doubles and Singles event will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday and the Team Event will take place Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.

League action continues with most leagues already in or now starting the final round of play for the season. Several leagues broke with the traditional 4-round system this season making it a little more difficult for me to keep up with them. The retailers league has now completed their season and the youth leagues on both Wednesday and Saturday will be wrapping up their seasons in the next week.

There wasn’t much to report in the scoring department last week, although a few bowlers did manage to make their presence known. Mary Siegrist stood tall among the ladies after blasting out a big 266 in the Wednesday Night Mixed league while Debbie Jones claimed the only 600 for the week with a 613 the same night. Paula Wooten claimed a 229 and Dana Carson led the Bowlerettes league with a nice 213. Nonie Embrey picked up a rare Triplicate Series with her three 167s. Matar McClinton and her husband Leslie got their heads together and showed the Monday Nighters that wedded bliss can still shine through even after all those years.

Only Mike Cothern was able to broach the 700 mark last week for the guys after a 10-in-a-row 287 game but fell just short with a 692. Nevertheless, it was good enough for him to claim both the high game and high series for the week. Don Crandell had the only other game over the 250-mark with a 268 in the Queen City league.

That’s all for this week. Until next week, good luck and good bowling.
