High scores continue

By Mike Carson / bowling columnist
The Meridian Star

Before I get started I would like to extend my apologies to readers for the lack of a column last week. Due to some unforeseeable circumstances, the bowling column did not appear until the Friday edition of the paper. We will try to make sure this doesn’t happen again in the future.

An explosion of high scores have highlighted the last two weeks. Included in that blast was the first 300-game of the season by Chuck Gray and a rash of 700s. One of the prime participants has been Ryan Killingsworth. In the past three weeks he has bombed out sets of 699, 700 and last week a big 743. In addition, he also tied Hucklebuck teammate Ronny Phillips for the high game last week with a 279.

Our sympathies and thoughts are extended to the family of former Meridian Bowler Ann Polling who passed away recently. Though illness had forced to retire from bowling some time ago, she was a very active member in the Women’s Bowling Association for many years. Among her survivors are husband Norm Poling and children Tandee Marx and Danny Otwell, all of whom are current bowlers. We extend to them our thoughts and prayers in this time of their loss.

Standings have been posted for the local USBC City Youth Tournament held this weekend. The local association would like to thank all those who took part and assisted with this event. Next on the local calendar is the Men’s City Tournament which will be held at McCain Lanes March 17-18. Late entries are not accepted. The final deadline for entries in the USBC Ladies State Tournament is March 14. The event will run for six weekends beginning April 28 at Dixie Bowl. We are hoping for a large turnout of local bowlers so get your entries in and help make this one of the biggest state tournaments ever.

Betty Dorrough, director of the Wednesday Fun Time youth league would like to thank all those who donated items for the Valentine’s baskets given away last week. The winners of the baskets were Jack Blythe, Randell Palmer, and Ed Smith.

That’s all for this week. Until next week, good luck and good bowling.
