I can't hear a thing.
I'm hoping it's just a temporary condition, but I blame myself.
Heading to Clarkdale for the conclusion of the Class 2A State Championship Series Thursday, I tossed a lawn chair in my car just in case there was no room in the standing-room only crowd.
It was back in the day so to speak — 1988, to be exact — and I was a sophomore at West Kemper High School.
Our girls' basketball team was playing in the Class 3A South State Tournament at Southeast Lauderdale. And after nearly 18 years in this profession, I've yet to see a collection of talent any more impressive.
JACKSON — Through the years, Joe Miller has been known — once or twice anyway — to raise his voice just a tad, even when his Southeast Lauderdale girls' basketball team is enjoying a lead on the scoreboard.
So despite a 19-point bulge at halftime, Miller wasn't exactly thrilled with the way his team got started Friday afternoon at the Mississippi Coliseum.
As anyone who follows college football knows by now, Houston Nutt was introduced as the new head football coach at Ole Miss Wednesday.
There seems to be a little discontent among the Rebels’ fan base, but I suppose that’s to be expected with any new hire. The truth is, Nutt will have done a fine job for UM if he comes anywhere close to what he did for the past 10 years at Arkansas.
It’s the way Nutt got to Oxford, however, that has folks scratching their heads.
Before I get started I would like to extend my apologies to readers for the lack of a column last week. Due to some unforeseeable circumstances, the bowling column did not appear until the Friday edition of the paper. We will try to make sure this doesn’t happen again in the future.
For 14 years the Atlanta Braves organization, coaches, players and fans have known nothing but how to finish in first place.

Here it is, nearly the middle of July with the sun beating down.
As new head coaches, Andy Kennedy and Neal Holliman are in the same boat in a lot of ways, although Holliman is the first to say Kennedy’s boat is a whole lot bigger.
The days are getting hotter and the action is slowing down for a bit, but the bowling continues throughout the sweltering summer.

Kenyatta Walker may be 27 years old and the starting offensive tackle for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but don’t think his mom, Carolyn Walker Brantley, doesn’t worry about her “big baby boy.”
You could say Charles Thrash has the best of two worlds. He doesn’t have the headaches of managing a dirt track anymore, but he’s still right in the middle of his favorite sport.
PEARL — Sometimes in this profession, you really have to scratch and claw for stories.
Rain, rain, go away.
After bad weather spoiled last Saturday’s grand re-opening of the Whynot Speedway, local dirt track fans and drivers are hoping the rain will move on out of the area before race time this Saturday night.
As the month of May progresses, league action in the Fall & Winter season continues to wind down.
It was 87 degrees and muggy at Meridian High School’s Ray Stadium Thursday afternoon — where the heat from an afternoon rainstorm and a little football practice across the street made it feel like August.
It has been a little more than three months since Rodney Wing purchased the old Whynot Speedway property and started working to turn it from a forest back into a dirt track again. But the wait is nearly over.
Here we are in the month of May. And that means that the 2005-2006 Fall and Winter season will soon be coming to a close.

Muscle cramps, dehydration and a lovely variety of insects...oh the joys of spring and hot weather! Don't get me wrong. Spring is my favorite season, but I do not enjoy biking while battling flying bugs of all sorts slamming into my face!

There is nothing quite like being shipped in packs on an old bus to the middle of nowhere, then being dropped off in the country and told to run 13.1 miles to the finish line; nothing quite like it indeed! I recall on approximately mile 9 looking up in the sky and seeing a buzzard and pondering to myself, "Is he waiting to scoop me up any minute now? Is that why he's circling all of us?" If you've ever run the great Frostbite Half-Marathon in Starkville, you know just what I mean.
Notes, quotes and an opinion or two while thawing out from a Lamar soccer match that turned frigid after a cold front moved through Monday afternoon:
My favorite time of the year is so close at this point, I can smell it.
